Vandal Gonzo Militia Field Blend 2020
One sunny day, whilst having a couple of beers, three Marlborough based winemakers decided to collaborate and make wines together under a single brand, Vandal. This “side project” gives each member scope to make wines they would not normally have the opportunity to put to bottle. They could be considered a bit weird in a more conventional sense, that said, the core of the Vandal ethos is ensuring wines are approachable and fun so don’t freak out just yet.
Pouring this into a glass, the first thing to look out for is a peach-pink hue around the edges, a visual indicator of the bonkers blend of grapes that goes into this rare and beautiful thing. You can expect a generous nose of ripe red apple, juicy melon and peachy, aromatic spring flowers. The palate is an explosion of fruit juices, it feels like a fistful of red and white grapes giving in to lengthy green apple acidity. The batonnage and lees ageing lends this wine a sumptuous texture and as you make your way down the bottle, opacity increases leaving the last glass semi-cloudy but still with that signature pink hue. Undeniably unique and inarguably delightful.
