Laventura Viura White Rioja 2019, MacRobert and Canals

Laventura Viura comes from an old vineyard principally composed of the Viura variety with a few strains of other varieties. The grapes ferment in 600 litre barrels with native yeast and the wine is aged with its lees, without carrying out batonage (a technique in which the lees are removed from the wine during fermentation) to avoid giving the wine excessive body.

Fantastic texture supports vibrant lemon and limes, peaches, flowers and a hint of spice. Rounded and textured.

Frankland Estate Isolation Ridge Shiraz 2006

Frankland Estate Isolation Ridge Shiraz 2006

Aromas of plum and black pepper; plus other mace-like spiciness. A lovely finish of dry brick with soft, dusty tannins. Mature and delightful.

Chianti Classico 'Retromarcia' 2018

Chianti Classico DOCG Monte Bernardi 'Retromarcia' 2018

Enticingly fragrant, this offers inviting aromas of violet, perfumed berry and a whiff of pipe tobacco. Made with organically grown grapes, the palate offers sour cherry and star anise alongside lithe tannins. Vibrant acidity keeps it balanced and focused.

Retromarcia Chianti Classico Monte Bernardi 2018

It would be easy to undersell the quality of this wine by saying it represents fantastic value, it certainly does but it offers so much more. Dark sour cherries on the palate, rustic acidity and smoky length. An obvious food choice would be fatty, spiced lamb cooked on coals with salsa verde or chimichurri.

Frankland Estate Isolation Ridge Shiraz 2006

It’s not a real barbecue without some bold Aussie booze. A sledgehammer this is not however, the bottle-ageing has softened the harsher edges of this wine and matured it into something dark and broody. Fantastic underlying blackcurrant notes with savoury tobacco grip, a rare treat and not one to be missed. Food pairing? Steak.
