Premium Natural Wines – Sommelier’s Six
Natural wines are bigger than ever and the range of styles and flavours available has grown exponentially. Here at Corkage we’ve hand-picked our favourites so that you can have a glass of something glorious in the comfort of your own home. This case of six luxury wines is sure to leave a lasting impression. Let’s take a closer look:
Fiore Vernaccia di San Gimignano DOCG Montenidoli 2019
A superb and savoury wine, with a nose of fennel seeds, pork fat and sea salt. A rich and complex palate of crisp apple, ripe peaches, lemon zest and fennel fronds leading into a saline lingering finish. This Tuscan rarity has an excellent balance of fruit and acidity. Ideally served slightly chilled alongside parma ham wrapped melon with shaved pecorino and basil leaves.
Momento Mori ‘Staring at the Sun’ 2019
Where do I even start with this one? It’s bonkers. It’s wild. It’s a staff firm favourite wine. A mad blend of aromatic Italian varietals, grown in Australia by a New Zealander. If skin contact wines are your thing then this blend is sure to send your taste buds into overdrive. A huge nose of peach and clementine, flowers and yeast. An extremely juicy wine with heaps of acidity, the palette is golden kiwis, yuzu and lemongrass leading to toasted cashews and kaffir lime leaf. There’s even a slight fizz keeping this wine refreshing and moreish. Pair this with Panang curry, lemongrass and ginger beef or even soft cheeses. We personally love this alongside pork belly with sriracha mayo so go nuts.
Lowerland Vaalkameel Colombard 2020
Colombard is certainly an unusual choice for a single-varietal wine, it’s typically austere and tart. A winemaker would most likely have to use some sort of magic to cultivate something delicious out of this ignoble grape. We can neither confirm nor deny any use of magic in the vineyards of Lowerland but we’re certain that this wine is truly special. It starts with a nose of freshly baked bread, giving way to fantastic oily texture with bright citrus and melon flavours plus, you guessed it, loooooong acidity. Mouthwatering and unique, this Colombard is one of our best-kept secrets.
Jean-Claude Lapalu Brouilly V.V. 2020
Lapalu has been something of a cult hero in recent years, with a range of his wines winning all sorts of awards alongside providing inspiration for a new generation of natural wine-makers. This Brouilly is clean, bouncy and aromatic, with pronounced flavours of wild raspberry, zesty rhubarb and juicy pomegranate seeds. A best friend to light game dishes, charred summer vegetables and lean red meats. All that being said, feel free to sit back and drink this as it stands, it’s awesome.
7 Fuentes, Suertes del Marqués 2019
Huge rustic aromas followed by bright red cherry flavours and tell-tale volcanic minerality. An awesome wine showcasing the unique terroir of Tenerife. Boost the smoky, volcanic qualities of this wine with chargrilled tenderstem broccoli with dark soy sauce, runny honey and toasted sesame seeds or barbecued lamb steaks served medium rare with plenty of garlic, smoked paprika and fresh mint.
Palazzo Della Torre, Veronese, Allegrini 2018
A rustic, earthy nose is supported beautifully on the palate by rich cherry, semi-dried figs, fresh leather and spice. A classic, rich ragu would work well as a pairing here, plenty of meaty flavours to support. A less traditional but equally delicious pairing would be seared ribeye steak dressed with dark soy sauce and toasted sesame seeds served alongside a crunchy asian slaw.
