Tessa Laroche is a fast-rising star in the Loire valley. She manages 22 hectares with 12 of them in the Savennières sub-appellation ‘Roche Aux Moines’ near the famed Coulée de Serrant. The estate was founded in 1981, however there are records of vineyards in the region since the Middle Ages when monks tended the vines. Founded by Madame Monique Laroche, the estate is now run by her daughter Tessa who has built a shining reputation for high-quality, low intervention Loire Chenin Blanc. One of the secrets to the success of the region is the schist soils with some sandstone and clay, lending a distinctive flinty, dry quality to the wines.
All of the wines are naturally fermented with indigenous yeasts and aged in a combination of tank and cask, 65-75% stainless steel with the remainder in wood. The wines are bottled fifteen to sixteen months after harvest, which of course is all done by hand. A truly gorgeous expression of Chenin Blanc from a cult heroine of the natural wine world.
