Fruit for this wine was hand picked from the Isolation Ridge vineyard at Frankland Estate. The vineyard is planted on northern and eastern facing slopes and has duplex soils of gravel and loam over clay subsoil. The Shiraz vines are trained on either Scott Henry, Vertical Shoot or Geneva Double Curtain trellis systems. Each of these three systems produces different fruit flavours providing balance and complexity to the wine. The vines are trimmed to enhance sunlight penetration of the canopy from early in the season. Leaf removal around the bunches just before veraison, further improved airflow and light penetration and enhanced flavour development. The juice was fermented as slowly as possible with temperatures kept under 30°C. Open fermentation tanks were used to facilitate working the cap which was plunged and/or pumped over gently according to the condition of fruit and stage of fermentation. When the ferment was complete wine was given an extended maceration period to maximise colour, tannin and flavour extraction. The wine was aged for two years in French oak (500 litre) puncheons of which 30% were new. Regular racking allowed minimal filtration prior to bottling. As one can imagine, the guys over in Frankland Estate make perfect wines for barbecues. We highly recommend that everyone tries this Isolation Ridge Shiraz as part of a case deal in our Luxury BBQ Box.
