Gregory Perez’s delicious Mencia from Bierzo has a soft, velvety texture with ripe red and dark fruit flavours lifted by Mencia’s brisk acidity. A small amount of Garnacha Tintorera (aka Alicante Bouschet, once widely planted here) gives the wine its more generous feel.
The grapes are sourced from old, head-pruned Mencia vines grown on the rocky hillside vineyards of Espanillo, Valtuille, Villafranca del Bierzo and Carracedo with a range of 30-60 year old vines. To keep the wine pure and juicy, Perez de-stems 90% of the fruit, and ferments it with wild yeast in stainless-steel vats.
