Ancient Vine Semillon ‘Long Gully Road’ 2017, David Franz, Barossa, South Australia £25.50
David Franz is the son of Barossa legend Peter Lehmann.
Long Gully Road might be the oldest Semillon vineyard in the world with impossibly old and low-yielding vines (129 years and counting), and has given this wine amazing purity, texture and concentration. Franz says the grapes are handpicked early at cool temperatures, then whole bunches are basket pressed before the wine spends six months on its lees. Just 3,180 bottles were made this vintage.
On the nose it’s honeyed Wax Lemon and golden summer grass over hints of rich yeast and aromatic dried herbs, and on the palate zesty lemon curd pie with a smooth honeyed finish. Balanced fruit and textural mouth weight fill the mouth with the light delicate combination of pure varietals, herbal leaves and yeast complexity. The super light and clean palate lingers on beautifully leaving the mouth ready for the next sip.
This is a fabulous match for moules mariniere or lemongrass prawns.
