World Cabernet Franc Day!
December 4th sees the next world grape day and it’s celebrating the wonderful Cabernet Franc grape.
Often used as a blend, when used as single varietal it produces stunning wines which can sing the notes of strawberry, raspberry and cherry, and also green pepper, flinty gravel and pencil shavings!
You can find richer fruity wines from warmer climates and leaner more tart & mineral wines from cooler climates. The grape is blended to make exceptional red wines from all over the world – particularly famous are those blends from in Bordeaux and Tuscany, as its herbacious notes and tannic structure add wonderful savoury elements to help give these wines their balance and ageing potential.
It’s also a parent grape of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Carménère.
Drink the fresher wines younger, and leave the bigger wines to age to allow the tannins to settle in and soften.
We’ll be celebrating the day with the Groot Constantia Gouverneurs Reserve 2018 – a South African blend with Cabernet Sauvignon 38%, Cabernet Franc 32%, Merlot 24%, Petit Verdot 6%. For more information on this wine please visit our Corkage Wine Merchant shop via the link below.
